Article: How to maintain your Manaita cutting board

How to maintain your Manaita cutting board
- Wash both sides by hand with warm water and mild soap. Dry immediately with a tea towel and allow to dry on its side.
- Do not put in the dishwasher or soak.
Oak has a high natural tannin content, which makes the wood antibacterial. However, the tannins also mean that oak can naturally and easily develop dark stains and blotches when it comes into contact with liquids, acidic foods or damp metal (e.g. from knives), if the wood is not kept saturated. Regular maintenance with wax or oil seals the surface and protects against stains.
Care & Maintenance (approx. once a month): Treat the board approx. once a month, or when the wood feels dry and water no longer beads off. Choose a care product according to the look you want:
- The very light look (as it comes from the factory): Use a clear cutting board wax / beeswax balm. Seals the surface without darkening the wood.
- The natural, neutral look: Use a colourless, food-grade paraffin oil (cutting board oil). Gives the wood a slight depth without yellowing.
- The warm, golden look: Use edible, cold-pressed linseed oil (available at the supermarket). Enhances the grain and gives a deep, golden glow.
Make sure the board is 100% clean and dry. Apply a thin, even layer of wax or oil over the entire board with a lint-free cloth. Leave to soak for 15–20 minutes, then thoroughly polish off any excess grease with a dry cloth.
Refreshing scratches and stains: The beauty of solid wood is that it can be renewed again and again. For deep knife scratches, raised wood fibres or stubborn dark stains, you can lightly sand the dry board along the grain with fine sandpaper (grit 180–240). Wipe away the sanding dust and immediately saturate the wood with wax or oil – the board will be like new.
