Shosa - Meditations in Japanese handwork

When visiting Japan, one of the first things that strikes you is the calm and respectful way the Japanese move. A weaver meditatively repeats the same movement a thousand times a day, while a tea master dedicates each calm gesture to the harmony of the space. While it may be difficult in the West to put into words this mindful way of moving, the Japanese have a word for it: shosa .

In this book, journalist Ringo Gomez-Jorge and photographer Rob Walbers profile 12 Japanese artisans from different parts of the country – from a bamboo weaver to a tatami mat maker, from a potter to a Zen monk. Ringo and Rob visited these artisans in their workshops and created in-depth portraits in both words and images.

The book is a travelogue through Japan with the hope of uncovering – through the work of Japanese hands – the complex meaning of shosa .

What is Japandi?

Japanese interiors are as popular as ever - and for good reason. The Japanese style has many features in common with the Scandinavian style.

Japandi is used for the style where elements from Japanese and Scandinavian design are combined. Here, the focus is on simplicity and good craftsmanship. The use of light wood, natural materials, calm colors and design is where the two styles especially meet and unite.

For us personally, the fusion between the Japanese and the Scandinavian consists in combining the things that we love most about the two worlds: good craftsmanship, minimalism, colors and calm.
